Getting started

What do I need?

An iPhone with iOS 26.4 or later and an internet connection. For the music, you need Spotify Premium with the Spotify app on your iPhone, or an Apple Music subscription.

How do I start a night?

Get into bed, open Mindtone and tap Go to Sleep. Mindtone checks that you’re in bed, because the Sleep Signal should only play there. Then: phone down, lights off.

Can I lock my phone?

Yes. The music and your alarm keep working with the phone locked. Mindtone stays active all night to make that possible, so we recommend charging your iPhone overnight.

Why is there no clock on the night screen?

Because there’s nothing to check in bed. After a few seconds the screen fades to near black so it doesn’t light up your room. The moon keeps breathing, so you know Mindtone is still with you. Tap the screen once to wake it.

The Sleep Signal

What is the Sleep Signal?

Every Mindtone session starts with the same 15-second sequence of soft bells. That’s the Sleep Signal. After it plays, it stays softly under the music for up to 10 minutes while you drift off, then fades away.

The Signal never changes. Same sound, every night. That’s what makes it work.

Why can’t I play it whenever I want?

Hearing the Signal while you’re awake during the day weakens the link with sleep. That’s why you hear it once during setup, and after that only in bed. It’s also why we don’t play it on this website.

Does Mindtone track my sleep?

No. There are no sensors, no microphone and no Health data. Mindtone records your sessions, such as when you went to bed and when the night ended. A few mornings in every seven-night cycle, it asks you how long it took to fall asleep. Your Journal shows those answers as your own estimate.

I can’t sleep. What should I do?

That’s okay. Let the music play and rest your eyes. If you’re still awake after about 20 minutes, get up for a while and come back when you feel sleepy. If you have trouble sleeping most nights, talk to a doctor. Mindtone is not a medical treatment.

Music

Where does the music come from?

Every night Mindtone builds a fresh mix of calm music, about ten hours long, and plays it through your music service. On Spotify, it lives in a private playlist called Mindtone · Tonight. It’s rebuilt every night, so there’s no need to edit it. With Apple Music, it plays from the Apple Music catalog, right inside Mindtone.

Why does Spotify need Premium?

Spotify only lets apps like Mindtone start and control music for Premium accounts. You also need the Spotify app installed on your iPhone, signed in to the same account.

The music didn’t start
  • Check that you’re connected to the internet.
  • Spotify: make sure the Spotify app is installed and signed in with your Premium account. If Mindtone asks you to reconnect, follow the steps on screen.
  • Apple Music: make sure your subscription is active and that Mindtone is allowed in Settings › Privacy & Security › Media & Apple Music.

Still silent? Write to us and tell us what you see on the screen.

What is Smart Fade?

Smart Fade lowers the volume gradually over the time you choose, from 5 to 45 minutes. With Apple Music it lowers your iPhone’s volume, then puts it back at the end of the night and before your alarm. If you change the volume yourself, Smart Fade steps aside for that night.

Can I use a speaker?

Yes. Play at a comfortable level on your phone, earbuds or room speakers. The night screen has an AirPlay button.

Alarm and reminders

How does the alarm work?

Mindtone sets the alarm with your iPhone’s own alarm system, using the standard iOS sound, with an 8-minute snooze. Allow Mindtone to set alarms when it asks, so the alarm rings even when the app is closed. You can change this later in your iPhone’s Settings › Apps › Mindtone.

I don’t get my bedtime reminder

Make sure notifications are on for Mindtone in Settings › Notifications. You can choose when the reminder comes, from 5 to 60 minutes before bedtime, in Mindtone’s settings.

Mindtone Plus

Do I need Mindtone Plus?

If you use Spotify Premium or Apple Music, no: Mindtone is free. Without either, the Sleep Signal and the ritual still work, but there’s no music. In that case, Plus adds your trends to the Journal: your time in bed, bedtime and wake-up time over 7 days, 30 days and all time. Plus doesn’t include music.

How do I cancel?

On your iPhone, go to Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions › Mindtone and tap Cancel Subscription. Deleting the app or your Mindtone account doesn’t cancel it.

How do I get a refund?

Apple processes all purchases, so refunds are handled by Apple. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

I bought Plus but it isn’t showing

Make sure you’re signed in with the same Apple Account you used to buy it, then tap Restore Purchases in Mindtone’s settings.

Your account and data

Do I need to sign up?

No. Mindtone creates an account for you the first time you open it. There’s no password to remember.

I have a new iPhone. Can I keep my nights?

Yes, if you use Spotify. Connect the same Spotify account on the new iPhone and your nights and settings come back. Without Spotify, your history can’t be moved to another iPhone yet.

How do I delete my account?

In Mindtone, go to Profile and settings › Account › Delete Account. You need an internet connection. We delete what identifies you, such as your email and your Spotify connection. Your history is kept only as de-identified statistics.

Deleting your account doesn’t cancel Mindtone Plus. The “Mindtone · Tonight” playlist stays in your Spotify account until you delete it there, and you can remove Mindtone’s access at spotify.com/account/apps.

Can I get a copy of my data?

Yes. Write to [email protected]. If you use Spotify, tell us the email of your Spotify account so we can find your data, and we’ll send you a copy. Our Privacy Policy explains what we keep and why.
